When people think of military cemeteries, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), they often visualise cemeteries containing thousands of graves. However the CWGC is also responsible for very small military cemeteries. One such cemetery is Ramparts Cemetery (Lille Gate).
Ramparts Cemetery lies within the town of Ieper itself, 1 km south of Ieper Market Square.
Ramparts (Lille) Cemetery, which runs down towards the Kasteelgracht (Castle Moat), is one of Ypres’ smallest cemeteries. It was started by French forces in November 1914 and was used by British Forces from February 1915 to 1918.
There are 153 UK, 11 Australian, 10 Canadian, 14 New Zealand and 5 unknown soldiers buried in the cemetery. The French graves have been removed.
