Private H. Carter (335), Middlesex Regiment, was tried at a Field General courts-martial held at Vermelles on 12 April 1916. The court consisted of a President and two members; the minimum number required for a Field General courts-martial. One of the officers trying Private Carter, Lieutenant Maynard, came from the same battalion.

The Brigadier-General, commanding 36th Infantry Brigade, wrote a letter recommending that the sentence of death on Carter should be carried out as an example to the rest of the men in the 11th Middlesex, whose behaviour he had criticised in a letter dated 13 April 1916.
Henry Carter is buried at Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery, Grave Reference O.2.
